Achievable Rates of Full-Duplex MIMO Radios in Fast Fading Channels With Imperfect Channel Estimation

Abstract: We study the theoretical performance of two fullduplex multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radio systems: a full-duplex bi-directional communication system and a fullduplex relay system. We focus on the effect of a (digitally manageable) residual self-interference due to imperfect channel estimation (with independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Gaussian channel estimation error) and transmitter noise. We assume that the instantaneous channel state information (CSI) is not available the transmitters.… Show more

“…9, we investigate the role of channel estimation errors on the sum-rate of the individual power constrained problem. We adopt the channel model used in [11], [12], [28], [55], where the estimation error is modeled as ∆H = H−H, wherẽ H and ∆H are uncorrelated, and the entries of ∆H are zero mean circularly symmetric complex Gaussian with variance σ 2 . It can be seen that as the channel estimation error, σ 2 , increases, the sum-rate decreases, and the gap between sumrate curves diminishes.…”

“…If the level of residual self-interference is time varying and can be measured in real time, then this paper also suggests that a dynamic switching between FD and HD modes may have an advantage. By using a multiple timeslot data transmission as in [17], [18], we can exploit both spatial and temporal freedoms of the MIMO links. Particularly, the use of distinct time slots gives the freedom to switch between FD and HD signaling depending on the power of the self-interference channel.…”

“…A group of recent papers such as [23,24] and [25][26][27][28][29][30][31][32][33] address full-duplex relays. But none of them addresses multicarrier fullduplex decode-forward relay with direct link even though it is well known that a decode-forward relay generally yields a higher capacity than an amplify-forward relay [9] .…”
