Acetylsalicylic acid enhance tolerance of Phaseolus vulgaris L. to chilling stress, improving photosynthesis, antioxidants and expression of cold stress responsive genes

Abstract: BackgroundHigh and low temperatures constitute the most damaging type of abiotic stress and limit the survival, and productivity of plants. The present study aimed to evaluate the role of exogenous applications of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) in reducing the deleterious effects of cold stress. Phaseolus vulgaris L. seedlings were treated with foliar-sprayed ASA at concentrations of 0–3 mM and then subjected to chilling stress at 4 °C for 2 or 4 days.ResultsGrowth, photosynthesis, biochemical alterations, oxidati… Show more

“…Reduced growth and chlorophyll synthesis due to Ni stress have earlier been demonstrated [4,5]. Abiotic stresses trigger chlorophyll degradation by activating chlorophyllase activity and down-regulating chlorophyll biosynthesis [13,29]. In addition, Ni-mediated decline in Mg [25], and N [5] uptake may have contributed significantly to reduced synthesis of chlorophyll and Rubisco reflecting in declined photosynthesis and production of photoassimilates therefore restricting the growth.…”

“…Increased activity of SOD and accumulation of GSH and proline under Ni due to NO application was inhibited due to NO scavenger. Effective ROS scavenging system protects the cellular functioning from the deleterious effects of excess ROS [13,14,34]. SNP application strengthened the ROS elimination mechanisms by upregulating the antioxidant system functioning and the content of redox components, including AsA and GSH with apparent effects at 100 µM NO.…”

“…ASA and 20% WAE were superior in this respect giving in average 2.084, 2.203 mg/g in first season and 2.162, 2.288 mg/g for second season, respectively. Previously, ASA positively affected photosynthetic pigments under both salt and drought stresses 26 as well as chilling stress 27 . Generally, increasing concentration of NaCl in irrigation water negatively affected leaves carotenoids content (Table 1).…”

“…Besides the acid form of SA, other related compounds, such as acetyl-SA or the sodium salt NaSA, could also be effectively used to improve stress tolerance [2,22,23]. These compounds have several advantages, including their better water solubility.…”
