Acetabular Labral Tears

Abstract: Acetabular labral tears rarely occur in the absence of a structural osseous abnormality. Labral tears are frequently associated with lesions of acetabular cartilage such as delamination. Hip arthroscopy is the preferred operative approach in the treatment of labral injuries in the absence of substantial structural osseous abnormalities.

“…Also, acetabular retroversion is increasingly recognized to be associated with hip disorders and arthrosis [1,2,4,6,12,13]. Although prosthetic component positioning is not determined solely by native acetabular anatomy, acetabular retroversion can create a problem if the surgeon implants the device in the anatomic position.…”

“…Based on those models, we calculated morphologic descriptors of the femur and pelvis using axes defined by bony landmarks according to Beaule et al [1]. Descriptors derived from each reconstruction included the intact subchondral head size, the head-to-neck ratio, the neck/shaft angle, and femoral anteversion.…”

“…Between January 2007 and September 2011, participants with different CE angle who received hip arthroscopic labral debridement for labral lesion were recruited retrospectively in this study. Indications for arthroscopic labral debridement in this study included persistent groin pain with failed non-operative treatment, such as the use of antiinflammatory medications, physical therapy or activity modification for more than six months, with or without associated mechanical symptoms (catching, clicking) [10]. Additionally, all patients had evidence of a labral tear on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).…”

“…The alpha angle is measured by placing a circle around the femoral head, one line along the center of the femoral neck and another line from where the first line meets the center of the femoral head to the point where the boney edge of the anterior head meets the circle. The normal alpha angle for men is 68°or less and for women, it is 50°o r less [4,21,22]. The beta angle is the angular distance in degrees from the edge of the acetabulum to the point just before a concentric femoral head circle is disrupted by the offset.…”
