Acerca del jeroglífico [T544.501] y las colectividades geopolíticas entre los mayas clásicos

Abstract

Resumen: El presente trabajo se centra en el jeroglífico maya [T544.501]. Por una parte, el artículo ofrece una revisión detenida de los contextos donde aparece el jeroglífico para, a partir de éstos, proponer que puede tratarse de un logograma con posible lectura OCH, "entrada"; por otra, considerando la predominante presencia de este jeroglífico en contextos que se refieren a colectivos geopolíticos, y más allá de su valor fonético, el artículo también analiza la dinámica histórica que habrían experimentado estas agrupaciones políticas del período Clásico Tardío tal como lo narran los textos en los que se halla el jeroglífico en cuestión.PalabRas clave: Jeroglífico [T544.501], colectividades geopolíticas mayas clásicas, escritura maya, desciframiento, cuevas.abstRact: This paper focuses on the Maya glyph [T544.501]. On one side the article offers a carefully review of the contexts where the hieroglyph appears for, from these, suggest that it may be a logogram with possible OCH ("entrance") reading. Moreover, considering the predominant presence of this hieroglyph in contexts which relate to geopolitical groups, and beyond its phonetic value, the article also analyzes the historical dynamics that have experienced these Late Classic political groupings as they narrate the texts where appears the glyph in question.

Kings of the East: Altun Ha and the Water Scroll Emblem Glyph

“…Assuming that the orientation of the initial portion is to be ignored as a scribal error of sorts, we can read this segment as elk'in or ‘east.’ The second portion appears as the title proper, which here may be rendered in a phonetically transparent form as yo?-K’IN , but one that is syncopated and affected by morphophonemic processes, possibly read as yok'in 5 . Whereas the precise form and meaning of this title remain debated, the surface form may find its origins in / y-ok-k'in /, referring to ‘the sun's entry’ or the ‘sun's pedestal, base, plinth’ (see Valencia Rivera and Sheseña Hernández 2016). Significantly, this title is here qualified and preceded by elk'in , east, indicating that the person bearing this title hailed from this quadrant of the world and exerted his office over a commensurate area.…”
