Accurate and High‐Precision Measurement of Lithium Isotopes in Two Reference Materials by MC‐ICP‐MS

Abstract: We report here a newly developed method for measurement of Li isotopes by use of multi‐collector ICP‐MS (Neptune) allowing rapid and high precision determination of Li isotope ratios at low levels of lithium (15–20 ng). The lithium reference sample solution IRMM‐016 was analysed over a period of ten months with an external reproducibility of 0.24% (2s, n = 52). Chemical separation of Li from matrix was performed on the seawater sample IRMM BCR‐403, for which a mean δ7Li value of + 31.0 ± 0.1 % (2s/√n, n = 31) … Show more

“…This mean value is in good agreement with our long-term measurement (δ 7 Li = +31.0‰ ± 0.5, 2σ, n=30, Millot et al, 2004) and with other values reported in the literature (see, for example, Tomascak 2004 for a compilation). For rocks, a total digestion of the sample is necessary before separation of Li from the matrix.…”

“…The value for seawater sampled offshore in the Bouillante bay (δ 7 Li = +29.3‰) is at the lower end of the range of variation observed for oceans worldwide (from +29 to +34‰, Millot et al, 2004). …”

“…However, in the context of water/rock 61 interactions, numerous studies (Huh et al, 1998(Huh et al, , 2001Pistiner et al, 2003; Kisakurek et al, 62 2004 Kisakurek et al, 62 , 2005 Pogge von Strandmann et al, 2006;Millot et al, 2007Millot et al, , 2010aMillot et al, , 2010b have 63 clearly shown that isotopic fractionation supports the enrichment of the heavy isotope ( 7 Li) in 64 solution, the light isotope ( 6 Li) being preferentially retained in secondary weathering 65 minerals. Silicate rocks display Li isotope compositions ranging from -2 to +10‰ (Coplen et 66 al., 2002;Teng et al 2004), that of seawater is ~ +31‰ (Millot et al, 2004), river water has 67 intermediate isotopic compositions (+6 to +23‰, Huh et al, 1998), and saline (thermo-68 mineral) water generally has isotopic compositions in the range of 0 to +15‰ 69 Négrel, 2007, Millot et al, 2010b) although Falkner et al (1997) found Li isotopic 70 compositions in the range of +17 to +35‰ in hot spring water from Lake Baikal. 71…”
