Accuracy Verification of an Anatomical Model Manufactured Using Low-Cost Additive Production

Abstract: The paper deals with the separation of the third cervical vertebra using the software VGStudio MAX, Mimics, and inVesalius. During the separation, various parameters of the threshold were used to determine the effect. The comparison of models from Mimics and inVesalius to VGStudio MAX showed that the cumulative variance distribution for 95% surface coverage is less than 0.935 mm. When comparing medically oriented software, Mimics and inVesalius, the deviation was less than 0.356 mm. The model was made of polyl… Show more

“…The computer software first reconstructs individual 2D planar sections that are covered with so-called voxels (volume elements), then assigns absorption coefficients to these voxels individually, thus distinguishing between multiple types of materials. It then composes a 3D spatial image from the 2D surface sections [ 40 ].…”

“…Cross-sectional DICOM images were exported into a medical segmentation software (Mimics v. 23.0; Materialise) and were segmented at a lower threshold of 226 Hounsfield units, a lower threshold previously used to select vertebral bone 9 and evaluate IVD calcification. 10 Calcified IVD were separated from vertebral endplates in individual CT slices using a Split Mask tool, and their mean density in Hounsfield Units was recorded.…”
