Accuracy of the typological classifications of the Late Glacial and Early Holocene osseous projectile points according to the new AMS dates of selected artifacts from Poland

Abstract: Late Glacial and Early Holocene bone and antler artifacts are recovered from all over the Polish Lowland. Elements of projectile weaponry, in the form of various points made of osseous raw materials, were an important part of hunter-gatherer equipment of that time. We present the results of AMS dating of a unique collection of thirteen artifacts that had previously been chrono-culturally attributed by means of relative dating using typological approaches only. The results obtained are considered alongside curr… Show more

“…Base incisions, with an aesthetic and/or functional meaning, are documented on barbed points from Star Carr [ 11 , 66 ] and the Colinda point [ 67 ] but are absent in the Doggerland assemblage. Bilateral barbed points, which are represented by one fragmented specimen in the Doggerland assemblage [ 27 ], have a more north-eastern European distribution and they likely have roots in the French and Cantabrian Magdalenian tradition [ 9 , 68 ]. The Doggerland points fit well in a unilateral tradition of bone points that has its roots in some of the technocomplexes of the final Upper Palaeolithic.…”

“…The points were placed on a hand-operated turntable and manually photographed. The smaller objects (NSM1, 6,9,19) were photographed at two different height stages. One image every 5˚was captured for each face, totally 72 per whole rotation.…”

“…12.6). Polish scholars made their own detailed classification; within points with round section, they singled out the "Nowe Juchy" type, which also includes points with a specific double-bevelled base (Galiński 1986;Orłowska, 2021).…”

“…Intensive studies reveal various aspects of prehistoric behavior, including the choices of raw materials, manufacturing techniques and the ways tools were used (e.g., David 2006;Bergsvik and David 2017;Orłowska and Osipowicz 2018). Organic implements can be directly dated by radiocarbon, providing precise dates for individual objects, and demonstrating continuity and transformations in tool-making traditions of particular implement types (Groß et al 2019;Gummesson and Molin 2019;Jensen et al 2020;Wild et al 2020;Orłowska and Osipowicz 2022). Not only osseous finds from settlement layers but also single (stray) finds can contribute relevant data on the hunter-gatherer osseous industry.…”
