Accuracy of the StressEraser® in the Detection of Cardiac Rhythms

Abstract: StressEraser is a commercially marketed biofeedback device designed to enhance heart rate variability. StressEraser makes its internal calculations on beat-to-beat measures of finger pulse intervals. However, the accuracy and precision of StressEraser in quantifying interbeat intervals using finger pulse intervals has not been evaluated against standard laboratory equipment using R-R intervals. Accuracy was assessed by simultaneously recording interbeat intervals using StressEraser and a standard laboratory EC… Show more

“…This method has been previously shown to accurately capture interbeat variability that is comparable to standard Electrocardiography and was pilot-tested in our laboratory using simultaneous pulse transduction and ECG before proceeding (Heilman et al, 2008). A Biopac MP150 pressure transduction system running AcqKnowledge 4.1 software (Biopac Systems, USA), with a 1000 Hz sample rate and 1 Hz high band pass filter, was used for acquiring and processing heart rate data.…”

“…A hand-held mobile HRV biofeedback device (StressEraser TM , Helicor, USA) validated by Heilman, Handelman, Lewis, and Porges (2008) was used for both the training and the testing sessions in the BIO group. An infrared emitter and sensor incorporated into the device into which the subject placed their index finger, measured the heart rate on a beat to beat basis.…”

“…After the familiarisation test, electrodes and transducers were applied to the subjects and connected to a Biopac MP150WSW (Biopac Systems, Goleta, CA, USA) to record electrocardiogram (ECG) and respiratory rates (Rr). The Biopac MP system is a laboratory-based physiological monitoring system which is commonly used as a research tool, and has been cited in numerous publications (Heilman et al, 2008). Subjects were seated throughout the testing and were instructed to move as little as possible.…”

“…It is an over-the-counter non-invasive biofeedback device which measures real-time pulse by pulse activity via an infrared finger sensor (Heilman et al 2008). The finger sensor has a built-in pulse detector to identify every pulse the moment it occurs.…”
