Accuracy of the malaria epidemiological surveillance system data in the state of Amazonas

Abstract: The Epidemiological Surveillance System for Malaria (SIVEP-Malaria) is the Brazilian governmental program that registers all information about compulsory reporting of detected cases of malaria by all medical units and medical practitioners. The objective of this study is to point out the main sources of errors in the SIVEP-Malaria database by applying a data cleaning method to assist researchers about the best way to use it and to report the problems to authorities. The aim of this study was to assess the qual… Show more

“…In order to obtain a higher quality of data on malaria cases, we excluded smear microscopy tests for cure verification (lâminas de verificação de cura -LVC -slides of the same person, whose data were duplicated), negative test results, and data cleaning, as described by Wiefels et al 22 . We used filters for municipality, country, federative unit, and test result to select only allochthonous cases of infection.…”

“…Regardless of significant associations, the disease-climate relationship is complex and indirect, particularly when considering data on malaria cases instead of those on vectors. Despite this limitation, these cases are excellent health indicators and can measure the epidemiological surveillance in the region, in addition to supporting the planning, initiatives, and control in healthcare agencies 22 .…”

“…Thus, it is considered an important tool for the analysis of the case's oscillations in different regions and contexts enabling to set effective strategies for controlling actions and malaria prevention (117). Furthermore, it is possible to determine which are the areas or population groups more affected by the disease, thus enabling to direct resources for worst affected regions, intensifying the fight against the disease (118). Additionally, P. falciparum infections were also shown to be associated to some microcephaly cases.…”
