Accuracy of prediction of the liveweight of horses from body measurements

Abstract: Fifty-three horses, all but two of them over two years of age and varying in type, sex and liveweight (230 to 707 kg) were weighed and seven different body measurements were recorded in duplicate by a single operator. The best overall prediction of liveweight using an equation with two variables was found to be: liveweight (kg) = (umbilical girth [cm])1.78 X (length of body from tuber ischii to elbow [cm]0.97/3011). This equation had an adjusted R2 value of 94.9 per cent and was derived from the pooled data, b… Show more

“…From these values the following parameters were calculated: (1) estimated body weight (kg) = -648-45 + 6-58 X HG (according to Jones et al, 1989); (2) anamorphosic index = (HG 2 )/H -a factor greater than 2-125 was established to accept a horse to be classified as a draught type (Perez et ah, 1992b). All the animals were examined to ensure that they were healthy.…”

“…In veterinary practice, at least as far as the donkey species is regarded, nutritional assessment is not systematically included in clinical checks. Moreover, the Body Condition Score (BCS) system and the predictive equation for body weight (BW) estimation based on body measurements are widely developed for horses and have been standardized for different horse breeds (Henneke et al, 1983;Jones et al, 1989;Martin-Rosset,1990;Bergero, 1996;Miraglia et al, 1998). However, to our knowledge, very few species-specific methods and techniques have been developed for the donkey species to date (Pearson and Oussat, 1996;Kay et al, 2000;De Aluja et al, 2005).…”
