Accuracy of Noncycloplegic Autorefraction in School-Age Children in China

Abstract: Noncycloplegic autorefraction was found to be highly inaccurate in school-age children and, thus, not suitable for studies of refractive error or for prescription of glasses in this population.

“…One study [41] report that noncycloplegic measurements of equivalent spheres were consistently more negative or less positive than those after cyclopegia. The use of non-cyclopegic auto-refraction is more accurate in the detection of astigmatism and abnormally high levels of hyperopia.…”

“…3,12,16 In the literature, we have seen few studies designed to compare the measurements Plusoptix S08 and an autorefractometer in children and adults. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21] Aim of the study was to evaluate if Plusoptix S08 could be considered as an autorefractometer or not.…”

“…Cycloplegia was considered complete if the pupil dilated 6 mm and pupillary constriction was absent. 15 17 The normality of our data was tested with Shapiro-Wilks test and because the normality assumption was not satisfied Wilcoxon signed rank test was used for the comparision of Plusoptix S08 and Topcon RM 8000B measurements. The significance level (p value) is chosen to be less than 0.05.…”

“…This method also compares the spherical equivalent and the overall blurring strength of the refractive error denoted by overall blur strength, which incorporates both the astigmatism and the spherical equivalence. This vector analysis was also used by Zhao and colleagues 11 in their population-based study comparing the accuracy of noncycloplegic and cycloplegic autorefraction in school-aged children.…”
