Accuracy of medical RP models

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to generate facsimiled rapid prototyping (RP) models for medical analysis that demands an answer about the accuracy of medical models.Design/methodology/approachThe RP technology for anatomical biomodeling is the accurate RP procedure of milling and joining, a method that is used to produce high accurate functional prototypes. To fabricate medical prototypes with RP, there is a need to get appropriate data information. Along that process, image data will be taken by computer… Show more

“…determinaron la validez y reproductibilidad de las medidas dentarias y segmentos de arcos dentarios en modelos obtenidos por estereolitografía y por scanner intraoral. Se estableció que los modelos obtenidos por ambos métodos son válidos y reproducibles para medir distancias en una dentición [13][14][15][16][17][18] .…”

“…Due to the importance of accuracy in the biomodels used in medical applications, several methods have been developed for evaluating geometrical errors in the models manufactured using RP and therefore for evaluating whether the STL or manufactured model is valid for a specific application. Most of the methods evaluate the error of the model by comparing distances between landmarks defined on the object and reproduced in the model [21,[30][31][32][33]. In the review by Rossini et al [34], a review of measurement techniques, accuracy analysis, and reproducibility is presented.…”

“…In addition to the aforementioned applications, the usage of the RP technology is also being studied and developed in the fields of biology and tissue engineering, fundamentally in structure fabrication for tissue growth and encapsulations for microfluidic devices [13][14][15]. Originally CT [16,17] was only used for diagnosis, but improvements in the accuracy of the machines and increases in the processing power of conventional computers have expanded the use of CT for the accurate measurement of geometries in both medical and industrial fields [18][19][20][21]. The result is a 3D volume with the density of each point of the selected tissue.…”
