Accuracy of Computerized Tomographic Evaluation of Canine Radio‐Ulnar Incongruence In Vitro

Abstract: Use of the technique reported in this study may enable determination of the association, if any, between radioulnar incongruence and developmental diseases of the canine elbow.

“…Because elbow joint spaces may vary between different areas of the joint (De Rycke and others 2002) and because differences in the plane of reconstructed images may lead to variation in JSM (Holsworth and others 2003), a standard transverse CT slice template was used to plan the reconstructed images. This allowed rCT images to be formatted at consistent levels in the elbow and thus minimise error.…”

“…The authors speculated that it may be possible to measure joint spaces from reconstructed computed tomography (rCT) images of canine elbows which could allow more accurate detection of incongruency. Despite preliminary investigations (Geilen and others 2001, Holsworth and others 2003), the use of rCT in dogs has not been fully validated. The aim of the current study is to assess the accuracy and reliability of rCT for the measurement of elbow joint spaces in the dog.…”

“…Even when free fragmentation has been subsequently identified by arthroscopy or arthrotomy, identification of disease of the medial aspect of the coronoid process (MCD) has historically proven challenging despite use of diverse imaging modalities including radiography 2,[14][15][16][17] ; computed tomography (CT) 11,18 ; scintigraphy 19 ; and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). 20 Typically, diagnosis is based on identification of secondary markers of degenerative joint disease in the absence of other discernable discrete pathologic changes.…”

“…A mensuração da incongruência radioulnar pode ser melhor realizada usando imagens tomográficas reconstruídas na região central do processo coronoide no plano oblíquo (Holsworth et al 2005). No estudo de Kramer et al (2006), as regiões central e ápice do coronoide não apresentaram diferenças significativas.…”
