Accuracy and efficacy of ultrasound‐guided pes anserinus bursa injection

Abstract: Purpose: To compare the accuracy and efficacy of ultrasound (US)-guided versus blind pes anserinus bursa (PAB) injection in patients with pes anserinus tendinobursitis (PATB).Methods: Forty-seven patients with clinically diagnosed PATB were randomly assigned to a USguided group or a blind group of steroid injection. In the US-guided group, the injectate was delivered under sonographic visualization. In the blind group, the conventional technique was used without any visual guidance. After the PAB injection, th… Show more

“…Treatment options for pes anserinus initially include rest and analgesia with non-steroidal anti-inflammatories. Second-line treatment is injection of the pes anserinus bursa with either corticosteroids, anaesthesia, or both [ 5 ]. Finally, if medical management fails, surgical resolution of the condition may be achieved through incision and drainage [ 2 ].…”

“…US-guided injection of steroid and HA could be a reasonable and easy mode for the treatment of trigger finger ; 74 however, it has been reported that it may be time consuming with more effort and similar clinical benefits compared to the blinded LMB technique. 75 US-guided Dupuytren’s contracture injection tended to be superior than standard injections.…”

“…A prospective randomized cadaveric study has shown that US-guided injections in the pes anserinus bursa are feasible and more accurate than palpation-guided injections [79]. A prospective controlled study comparing US-guided to blind corticosteroid injections into the pes anserinus bursa of patients with bursitis showed that the US-guided injections resulted in greater improvement at 1 and 4 weeks compared to blind injections [80]. Based on review papers, possible interventions in the prepatellar bursa include US-guided corticosteroid injection into an inflamed bursa or aspiration for diagnosis of infection or other synovial pathology [81].…”
