Accupuncture-like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation therapy success using a commercially available unit 8 years post-radiation for xerostomia: a case report

Abstract: Background: Accupuncture-like transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (ALTENS) therapy has been shown in prospective studies to be effective in the treatment of radiation-induced xerostomia. Those studies treated patients within 27 months from end of radiation with ALTENS delivered in the clinic using a Codetron unit. However, that unit is no longer produced and there is limited data on success of ALTENS when delivered at home.

“…Diseases. e types of epileptic seizures can be divided into partial seizures, general seizures, and difficult-to-classify seizure types [8]. e socalled partial seizure, also called local seizure, refers to changes in specific symptoms when the seizure begins, and neurons in the cerebral hemisphere are initially activated, including simple partial seizures, complex partial seizures, and second full seizures.…”

“…Recognizing that the Codetron TENS unit used in all prospective studies (including this one) is no longer in production and that time in clinical practices is limited, our group has described successfully treating a patient with xerostomia by using a protocol for patients to selfadminister ALTENS treatment at home, with a commercially available and cheap device (roughly $300). 16 To further improve the convenience of treatment for these patients, our group would like to further evaluate the efficacy of unmonitored home use of ALTENS by initiating a multiinstitutional study enabling other treatment centers to loan ALTENS units to HNC survivors with xerostomia.…”

“…After the publication of the previous review, there has been only one additional report of a RCT that compared two different ALTENS protocols without placebo control (Iovoli et al., 2020). In addition, from a previous case report, the authors proposed ALTENS for home use in the future (Iovoli & Singh, 2017). It would be interesting the see the future development of the TENS protocol for managing radiation‐induced dry mouth.…”
