The distribution of ice‐rafted detritus (IRD) is studied in three cores from the western Svalbard slope (1130–1880 m water depth, 76–78°N) covering the period 74–0 ka. The aim was to provide new insight into the dynamics of the Svalbard–Barents Sea Ice Sheet during Marine Isotope Stages (MIS) 4–1 to get a better understanding of ice‐sheet interactions with changes in ocean circulation and climate on orbital and millennial (Dansgaard–Oeschger events of stadial–interstadial) time scales. The results show that concentration, flux, composition and grain‐size of IRD vary with climate and ocean temperature on both orbital and millennial time scales. The IRD consists mainly of fragments of siltstones and mono‐crystalline transparent quartz (referred to as ‘quartz’). IRD dominated by siltstones has a local Svalbard–Barents Sea source, while IRD dominated by quartz is from distant sources. Local siltstone‐rich IRD predominates in warmer climatic phases (interstadials), while the proportion of allochthonous quartz‐rich IRD increases in cold phases (glacials and stadials/Heinrich events). During the Last Glacial Maximum and early deglaciation at 24–16.1 ka, the quartz content reached up to >90%. In warm climate, local iceberg calving apparently increased and the warmer ocean surface caused faster melting. During the glacial maxima (MIS 4 and MIS 2) and during cold stadials and Heinrich events, the local ice‐sheets must have been relatively stable with low ablation. During ice retreat phases of the MIS 4/3 and MIS 2/1 transitions, maxima in IRD deposition were dominated by local coarse‐grained IRD. These maxima correlate with episodes of climate warming, indicating a rapid, stepwise retreat of the Svalbard–Barents Sea Ice Sheet in phase with millennial‐scale climate oscillations.

The provenance of coarse-grained ice-rafted detritus has been studied, based on material collected from the SE Greenland margin.The sediment was sampled by a 1.5 m 3 video-grab from 1256 m water depth. The fraction > 1cm was macroscopically investigated and a thin-section analysis was made. The results clearly show that East Greenland north of the Denmark Strait is the source region of the material sampled. The main provenance is from areas adjoining Kangerdlugssuaq Fjord, Blosseville Kyst, Scoresby Sund, Kong Oskar Fjord, and Kejser Franz Joseph Fjord. It can thus be demonstrated that significant ice-stream activity and iceberg calving occurred there. Present-day iceberg production is mainly concentrated to the Scoresby Sund, but the other areas apparently represent locations of larger ice-stream activity during periods prior to the Holocene.More generally, it can be concluded that southerly surface-water flow similar to the present East Greenland Current must also have occurred prior to the Holocene. Although either North America (Canada) or Scandinavia -or both -are generally referred to as important regions for the provenance of ice-rafted detritus, we conclude that (East) Greenland may have been an important source for (late) glacial North Atlantic ice-rafted detritus production as well.

Abstract. Paleocirculation of the North Atlantic Ocean at the last glacial maximum (LGM) is simulated using a large-scale ocean general circulation model (OGCM). The model is driven by glacial sea surface thermohaline conditions and wind stress. For comparison of past and present circulation patterns, a separate run provides the Holocene/modem circulation patterns based on the present day sea surface climatology. The output of the OGCM is then used in a sedimentation model and in a model to trace water parcel trajectories. The sedimentation model reveals the differences in sediment deposition in the North Atlantic linked to past and present circulation regimes. The trajectory-tracing model facilitates a better understanding of the thermocline and deep ocean ventilation, the actual three-dimensional conveying of water, and the role of convection in maintaining the meridional thermohaline overturning. The results of the trajectory-tracing technique indicate stronger subtropical thermocline ventilation during the LGM. For the deep ocean currents, we find severe alteration of three-dimensional water motion in response to weakening of the LGM convection and its retreat to the southwest from its present locations. Ocean circulation models can provide sedimentation studies with information on the circulation regime that proxy data used alone cannot. These is because such models furnish both circulation patterns and the ventilating convection depths.
