“…However, the inhibition of fungal growth on water agar containing mansonones was less effective (DUMAS et al, unpubhshed data). OVEREEM and ELGERSMA (1970) also reported the relative insensitivity of O. nlmi to mansonones when compared to other fungal species grown on nutrient agar medium eontaming mansonone E or F. We observed that there was a quicker drop of inhibition of isolate CESS16K than that of isolate Q311 after the isolates grew on mansonone agar medium over 3 days (data not shown), as if the aggressive isolate CESS16K were developing a tolerant mechanism. These results urged the necessity of seeking the way in which we would be able to evaluate the effect of mansonone E in vivo.…”

“…There are reports on the toxicity of mansonones on fungi on TLC plates and in agar media (OVEREEM and ELGERSMA 1970;DUMAS et al 1983). However, little is known of the ultrastructural and physiological effects of mansonones on O. ulmi.…”

“…This leads us to speculate that compounds inhibitory to the pathogen may be involved in resistance. This assumption has not been suggested by other investigators (5,16). In this paper, we report the differential accumulation of inhibitory substances against the growth of ati aggressive strain of C. ulmi in American elm seedlings, after conditioning inoculation with a non-aggressive strain of the same pathogen.…”

“…Mansonones induced in Ulmus spp. following challenge with Ophiostoma ulmi had little activity in vitro against this fungus (Overeem & Elgersma, 1970;Elgersma & Overeem. 1971).…”
