“…The total duration of strontium citrate intake was 47 days, which included 1 week of preoperative acclimatization period, 1 week of latency phase, 5 days of distraction phase, and 4 weeks of consolidation phase. The dose of strontium citrate was based on previous studies of strontium in rats, because no rabbit studies were found . Rabbits were weighed daily to adjust the dosing as needed.…”

“…Strontium, as the ranelate or citrate, is used to treat osteoporosis but its metabolism is poorly understood. To determine the accumulation of Sr, to evaluate differences between the two agents and to verify the XRF spectrometric methodology, Wohl et al 77 measured Sr concentrations in bone. Aer administration to female rats for 8 weeks, bone Sr in the citrate-treated animals was approximately 100 times greater than in control animals and 35% greater than in the ranelate-treated rats.…”

“…Strontium ranelate, a strontium salt of ranelic acid, is a proposed drug for osteoporosis treatment, that inhibits bone resorption and promotes bone formation. 9,10 Since strontium (Z = 38) has a higher atomic number than calcium (Z = 20), this leads to a greater attenuation of X-rays. Hence, strontium in bone leads to an overestimation of aBMD values obtained by DXA.…”
