Bioconversion of coal to methane occurs in the coalbed aquifer environment. To investigate the evidence of coal biodegradation from coalbed-produced water, we collected six field water samples from the Dafosi gas field and prepared one laboratory-simulated water sample and one indoor anaerobic microbial degradation sample with the highest compound concentration as the two reference standards. Gas chromatography−mass spectrometry was used to detect the organic compound type, concentration, and differences in the biomarker compound sensitivity. Results indicate that extracted organic matter from coalbed-produced water samples can be evidence of biodegradation. Variations in range compounds (such as n-alkanes, tri-and pentacyclic terpenes, and steranes) and their sensitivity confirmed active microbial degradation in the studied area. A positive correlation between the n-alkanes content in the coalbed-produced water and the stable carbon isotope value of methane further verifies that the n-alkanes are primary substrates for maintaining microbial activity. Therefore, evidence including n-alkanes, tri-and pentacyclic terpenes, steranes, unresolved complex mixtures, and stable carbon isotope composition of methane contribute to biogenic methane generation in situ. Our limited data suggest that managing soluble organic matter in the coalbed-produced water may provide a viable route for coal biodegradation since most microorganisms survive within the coal seam water.

Interactive depositional systems of marine carbonates and gypsum salt rocks are closely related to natural gas reservoirs. Despite continuous progress in the exploration of new areas of marine carbonate genesis within the Ordos Basin, the source and mechanism of “sub-salt” natural gas genesis remains controversial. In this study, we investigated natural gas genesis through geochemical analysis of Lower Paleozoic natural gas samples from the mid-eastern Ordos Basin, obtaining natural gas composition data and carbon/hydrogen isotope compositions. We found evident differences between the geochemical characteristics of “sub-salt” and “post-salt” natural gas; the methane carbon isotope signature of “sub-salt” natural gas was lighter overall than that of “post-salt” natural gas, while the ethane carbon isotope composition of the former was more widely distributed and partially lighter than that of the latter. Combining these data with the regional geological background and existing geochemical data, it is evident that Ordovician “post-salt” natural gas comprises a composite of Upper Paleozoic coal-type gas and Lower Paleozoic oil-type gas, with the oil-type gas accounting for the largest proportion. In contrast, the “sub-salt” natural gas was formed and preserved within the Ordovician marine carbonates or sourced from deeper and more ancient hydrocarbon source rocks. Geochemical anomalies, including light methane carbon isotopes and ethane carbon isotopes with coal-type gas characteristics, are closely related to the prevalence of thermochemical sulfate reduction during hydrocarbon formation and reservoir formation of natural gas in “sub-salt” strata.

This study aims to elucidate the mechanism by which the ultrasonic loading of metal affects the extraction of small molecular phase substances (low molecular compounds) in tar-rich coal. Tar-rich coal samples were collected from the Huangling mining area in the southeastern Ordos Basin, China. The coal, the leaching solution of the coal, the extraction products, and the extraction residual coal samples with different metal ions loaded by ultrasound were analyzed using field emission scanning electron microscopy, pH detection, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, and an X-ray diffractometer. The obtained results indicated that the ultrasonic loading of coal samples with different metal ions (Mn2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Fe2+, and Ni2+) promoted the extraction of small molecular phase substances in coal and increased the proportion of extracted aliphatic hydrocarbons, alkylbenzene, naphthalene, phenanthrene, and other compounds. The extraction rate of Mn2+ was the highest. Compared with the control group, the extraction rate was increased by 212%. After the ultrasonic loading of metal ions, the physical structure of the coal was loose and the contact area of the solvent increased; the degree of branching and the hydrogen enrichment of the residual coal decreased, the aromaticity increased, the interlayer spacing and stacking layers decreased, and the stacking degree and ductility increased. Metal ions exchanged with hydrogen ions in the coal molecules. At the same time, the metal ions were adsorbed in the coal molecules and effectively combined with free electrons in the coal molecules to catalyze; thus, the extraction effect of the small molecular phase of tar-rich coal was improved. This provides a new method for the clean and efficient utilization of tar-rich coal.
