“…Financial strain is considered a stressor exposure with significant mental and physical health effects. For example, studies have shown that financial strain contributes to adverse health outcomes in women, such as increased oxidative stress levels, greater malnutrition risk, lower self-rated health, and recurrent coronary events (Georgiades et al 2009; Palta et al 2015; Samuel et al 2012; Shippee et al 2012). However, data examining the effects of financial strain during pregnancy are limited.…”

“…9 CIT incorporates the potential for events throughout the life course to mitigate or interrupt the cumulative effects of early life course disadvantage. An exemplar in this growing area of research was the study conducted by Shippee and colleagues 12 in their longitudinal examination showing the effects of accumulated financial strain on women's health trajectories.…”

“…Research has shown that financially disadvantaged individuals report poorer health ratings than the more advantaged (Shippee, Wilkinson, & Ferraro, 2012), and Cluster 2 echoes results. Its members report, on average, the poorest levels of personal health and the lowest levels of health insurance coverage (23% with no coverage) of the clusters.…”
