Accounting for research quality: Research audits and the journal rankings debate

Abstract: The question of whether and how research quality should be measured, and the consequences Research audits are therefore forcing the separation of teaching from research in UK business schools. With an estimated ratio of 71 full time students per research active faculty member in UK business schools, it may be time to consider a more appropriate, inclusive, and economical form of ranking for research in business and management.

“…Hussain, ; Mingers and Willmott, ; Willmott, ). Alternatively, the use of journal lists has been defended by those who see them as a generally accepted means of ranking journals by academics (Morris, Harvey and Kelly, ; Rowlinson et al ., , ), and much of the literature also notes the acceptance and promotion of journal lists by academic managers such as Deans (Agyemang and Broadbent, ; De Rond and Miller, ; Macdonald and Kam, ; Mingers and Willmott, ; Willmott, ). A recent bibliometric analysis suggests that journals with high rankings in lists are more supportive of innovative, interdisciplinary and diverse papers, but tend to favour more quantatitive methods than lower‐ranked journals (Vogel, Hattke and Petersen, ).…”

“…and Sector Studies, covering a wide range of specialisms that includes health and education); issues or interests (Ethics and Governance; Innovation and Technology Management; Management and Education); as well as more or less residual categories (General Management, which includes many of the leading B&M journals; and Social Sciences). (Rowlinson et al, 2013) While it may be necessary that such a disparate field as B&M does require different kinds of sub-fields, it should be possible to generate them on the basis of actual publication and citation behaviour rather than purely ad-hoc judgement.…”
