Accounting for marine economic activities in large marine ecosystems

Abstract: We develop an index that is a measure of the intensity of marine activities in large marine ecosystems (LMEs). We compare this marine activity index with an index of socioeconomic development across ocean regions. This comparison identifies regions that may be capable of achieving the sustainable development of their regional marine environment on their own and those that are less likely to do so. The latter may be candidates for international financial or management assistance. An important next step is to ca… Show more

“…Martinez et al (2007) [24] made a comprehensive evaluation of marine ecology, the economy, and society in many countries. Hoagland et al (2008) [25] clarified the relationship between marine activities and the national economy by analyzing the intensity of marine ecological activities in coastal areas. There is also a proportion of scholars who believe that economic development is a comprehensive concept and that total factor productivity (TFP) fully considers cost in the production process, which is more reflective of the characteristics of high-quality development, and therefore, marine TFP is needed to assess the quality of economic development [26,27].…”

“…The past extensive development mode has caused serious damage to the marine ecological environment. Hoagland and Jin (2008) obtained the relationship between marine ecology, social and economic development by collecting a large amount of data and using quantitative methods, and divided their states. Gao and Gao (2012), on the basis of existing research results, gave a precise definition of marine ecoeconomic system.…”

“…A Corrente Fria de Benguela representa um dos 64 grandes ecossistemas do mundo, cuja preservação constitui objeto de múltiplas iniciativas intergovernamentais (HOAGLAND & JIN, 2006). De entre elas, destaca-se a Comissão da Corrente Fria de Benguela, uma organização constituída por Angola, Namíbia e África do Sul, e que visa promover a gestão integrada, desenvolvimento sustentável e proteção ambiental daquele Grande Ecossistema Marinho (BCC, 2011).…”
