Abstract: Absent from the important debate on the determinants of rapid Asian growth is the role of gender inequality. This paper argues that gender wage inequality has stimulated growth, with Asian economies that disadvantaged women the most growing the fastest from 1975 to 1990. Low female wages have spurred investment and exports by lowering unit labor costs, providing the foreign exchange to purchase capital and intermediate goods which raise productivity and growth rates. “…Higher economic growth is associated with higher inequality between male and female. The reason is that trade in capital intensive sector results in higher economic growth (Lewer and Den Berg, 2003) and women are usually employed in labor-intensive sectors that use mostly cheap unskilled labor (Ozler, 2000;Blecker and Seguino, 2002;Seguino, 2010). “…Tüm eşitsizliklerin aynı derece eşitsizlikler olmadığını savunan feminist yaklaşım, ihracata dayalı 'büyümeyi' hedefleyen ekonomilerde bir yanda erkek ve 'vasıflı' işçilerin yoğunlaştığı sektörler yaratırken diğer tarafta kadın ve çocuk işçilerin yoğunlaştığı ihracat sektörlerini oluşturduğunu göstermektedir (Çağatay vd., 1995;Çağatay/Berik, 2001;Özler, 2000;Seguino, 2005). Bu alandaki bazı çalışmalar, Doğu Asya ekonomilerinde mucizevi olarak adlandı-rılan 'büyümenin' sosyal cinsiyete dayalı ücret farklıklarındaki artış nedeniyle pozitif yönde etkilendiğinin bulgularını da ortaya koymaktadır (Seguino, 2000).…”

“…Ironically enough, economic growth can sometimes even benefit from gender inequality (Seguino 2000a(Seguino , 2000b. If women's wages are low, there is a greater chance that much money will be invested in labour-intensive, export-oriented industries.…”
