“…The validity of the data is ensured by the co-authors discussing and reaching consensus in relation to coding ambiguities and the construction of disclosure items by combining the codes (see, for an example of this approach, Abhayawansa et al, 2021). One of the co-authors doublechecked the coding to ensure intra-coder reliability (see, also, Krippendorff, 2004).…”

“…Strong governance structures and public accountability processes are critical to the national implementation of SDGs (Meuleman, 2018;Abhayawansa et al, 2021), especially in developing countries (DCs). Yet, we know little about the nature of accountability and governance mechanisms at the national level, and their impact upon the dynamics of implementing SDGs in DCs such as Tanzania.…”

“…Accounting scholars have problematised the paradox of accountability and sustainability governance in contemporary society (Barrett et al, 2020;Unerman, 2018, 2020;Charnock and Hoskin, 2020;Hopper, 2019;Niles and Moore, 2020;Sobkowiak et al, 2020). However, there has been relatively little exploration of the relationship between accountability and governance in pursuing and attaining SDGs (Abhayawansa et al, 2021;Breuer and Leininger, 2021), especially at the local level, and its challenges in a DC context. Given the challenges encountered during implementations of the MDGs and the limited success of previous pro-poor development initiatives, structured through hierarchical top-down regimes in DCs (Word Bank, 2005), localization 2 of the SDGs requires new forms of governance and accountability mechanisms at the national level to address their pressing socio-economic and environmental issues (United Nations, 2015;UNRISD, 2016).…”
