Accordance between V̇O2max and behavior in Ngisonyoka Turkana

Abstract: This study examined the relationship between maximal aerobic work capacity (maximal oxygen uptake, V̇O max) and two variables (occupational group and history of cattle herding) related to the behavior of the Ngisonyoka Turkana, a group of East African pastoralists maintaining a traditional herding lifestyle. Maximal oxygen uptake was measured for 19 men aged 20-44 years using a Monark bicycle ergometer. In line with previous reports for East Africans, there was little difference among mean V̇O max for three Ng… Show more

“…Previous work indicates little decline with age from 30 to 50 years in VO 2 max among men, while senior herd owners who do less work do show a decline in VO 2 max (Curran and Galvin, 1999;Curran-Everett, 1994). Thus it may be that continued physical exercise plays a role in maintaining T levels among older Turkana men.…”

“…Delayed development in food-limited populations has been well documented (Shephard, 1978;Little and Johnson, 1986;Curran-Everett, 1994). Whereas studies in food-abundant populations demonstrate greatest isometric muscle strength in the late teens (i.e., Swedes in Bäckman et al, 1995), undernourished traditional populations like the Ache tend to demonstrate performance peaks in the early-to mid-20s.…”

“…The few studies that have examined cardiovascular fitness in subsistence populations show mixed evidence for a decline in fitness with age. Turkana men engaging in pastoralism do not exhibit a consistent decline in VO 2 max by age 45 (Curran‐Everett, ). Ache women living on a reservation and practicing a combination of gathering and horticulture do not exhibit a decline in cardiovascular fitness by age 60 (Walker and Hill, ).…”
