Acclimation of marine invertebrate osmolyte systems to low salinity: A systematic review & meta-analysis

Abstract: Salinity is a major environmental factor shaping the distribution and abundance of marine organisms. Climate change is predicted to alter salinity in many coastal regions due to sea level rise, evaporation, and changes in freshwater input. This exerts significant physiological stress on coastal invertebrates whose body fluid osmolality follows that of seawater (‘osmoconformers’). In this study, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of osmolytes (both organic and inorganic) utilized by osmoconformi… Show more

“…In contrast, survival of long-term exposure to salinity stress requires the regulation of cell volume by organic and inorganic osmolytes to achieve the isosmotic state of the cellular environment relative to the habitat. This state is achieved by altered activity of de novo amino acid synthesis and protein breakdown ( Meng et al, 2013 ; Zhao et al, 2012 ), and changes in the transport and retention of inorganic ions, particularly sodium ( Podbielski et al, 2022 ).…”
