Accidental Fatal Drug Overdoses in New York City: 1990–1992

Abstract: This study of all accidental fatal drug overdoses (N = 1,986) in New York City from 1990 to 1992, using medical examiner data, found that cocaine, often with opiates and ethanol, caused almost three-fourths of deaths, while opiates without cocaine caused roughly one-fourth of fatal overdoses. Only 5% of accidental drug fatalities were caused by drugs other than cocaine or opiates. This is a marked departure from the results of studies in the early 1980s when opiates prevailed as a cause of accidental fatal ove… Show more

“…In the multiple logistic regression models, female decedents were more likely to have a cocaine only overdose and male decedents an opiate only overdose. This finding is contrary to other studies [25,42] and particularly interesting since it has been shown that males with a fatal cocaine overdose were more likely to have contributory coronary disease[25]. The higher risk of cocaine only overdose among women seen in our analysis may reflect unique characteristics of the drug economy and drug use patterns in the United States or in NYC and bears further study.…”

“…The OCME applies uniform guidelines to its reporting of cases to ensure that causes of death are consistently determined. 91 This indicates that the mortality data we used were a valid representation of the causes of death in New York City. We also believe that our data represent a complete count of unintentional mortality cases, given the expectation that all unexpected deaths are reported to the OCME.…”

“…Overdose death rates have varied significantly by drug type (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2004). Cocaine and heroin were historically considered leading causes of overdose death in the US (Tardiff et al, 1996; Harlow, 1990; Mittleman and Wetli, 1984). Methamphetamine use increased in the last decade, and thus may have contributed to an increase in related overdose deaths (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2005; Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2007).…”
