Accident involvement among Iranian lorry drivers: Direct and indirect effects of background variables and aberrant driving behaviour

Abstract: Road accident rates among Iranian lorry drivers are considerably high and, according to the evidence, aberrant driving behaviours, summed to certain demographic, psycho-social and workrelated factors, may help to explain their accident involvement. For this reason the main aim of the study was to examine the direct and indirect effects of background variables (i.e. annual mileage, driving experience, demographic and socioeconomic factors) on accident involvement mediated through aberrant driving behaviour amon… Show more

“…The validated 27-item DBQ [ 17 , 19 ] was used to measure aberrant driving behaviour. The original version of DBQ in Persian, which has been used in this study, was already tested and validated on a group of professional lorry drivers in Iran [ 20 ]. The content validity of the original questionnaire was checked by a panel of experts.…”

“…The authors explored three principal factors (violations, dangerous errors, and relatively harmless lapses) for this instrument. Later, the DBQ was abridged or extended to cover new driving factors (e.g., aggressive violation) [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 ]. Several studies have applied the 28- or 27-item version of the DBQ in recent years.…”

“…A score higher than mean value indicated the highest driver errors and violations in driving behaviors. The validity of the DBQ has been validated in numerous studies conducted in Iran [ 26 – 28 ].…”

“…Some studies have investigated the factors affecting the occurrence of accidents and the investigating models of accident prediction in the field of cargo fleet. One of the most important parameters affecting the occurrence of lorry accidents, which were investigated in previous studies, is the age and the number of hours worked by the driver [4,6,[11][12][13][14][15][16]. Researchers have also concluded in other studies that factors such as drowsiness, fatigue, and how salaries are paid increase the risk of accidents [17].…”

“…Researchers have also concluded in other studies that factors such as drowsiness, fatigue, and how salaries are paid increase the risk of accidents [17]. Other variables used in modeling the lorry driver's accidents include driving experience [4,6,14], physical health characteristics [4,6], sleep duration [11,14,15], mileage [11,14], and gender [4,[11][12][13][14][15][16].…”
