Accessory renal arteries in a Caribbean population: a computed tomography based study

Abstract: IntroductionThe commonest variation to the classic anatomic description of renal arterial supply is the presence of accessory renal arteries. The incidence varies widely according to ethnicity. There is no data on the prevalence of these anomalies in persons of Caribbean ethnicity.MethodsAll CT scans done over two years from July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2012 were retrospectively evaluated. The anatomy of the renal arterial supply was reported from these studies and the anatomy of accessory renal arteries was docum… Show more

“…[4] In a computed tomography based study by Johnson et al, 10.02% incidence of left sided lower polar supernumerary renal arteries was seen. [5] This incidence is more than the 4 % incidence seen in present study. A 100 % incidence of aortic origin of supernumerary renal artery is also stated, which is similar to present study.…”

“…1,2 In fact, the vascular pattern is much more complicated and vastly differs in individuals 1,3 and, nowadays, the occurrence of accessory renal arteries (ARA) in a human body is believed to be more representative than previously anticipated. 3,4 The main renal artery was considered to be a single, dominant artery arising from abdominal aorta that entered the renal hilum and branched into segmental arteries. Accessory renal arteries did not branch prior to entry into renal parenchyma.…”

“…variation of renal arteries is extremely important for the vascular clinic and imageologists [3]. The accessory renal arteries range from 18.3% and 36.1% of the cases, on the right side the variation is from 11 to 16% and on the left side from 10 to 23%, and in both sides it can get to 5% [1,4,5,8]. In our study, two double bilateral renal arteries were found.…”

“…In rare cases it can be originated below the understanding about anatomical variations of the renal arteries is important not only for anatomists, but mostly for urological surgeons on the formulation of better conduct on the renal transplants procedures [4,6,7]. The present study had the goal to report a case of renal artery bilateral duplicity in a male fetus.…”
