Accessibility of tourism space from a geographical perspective

Abstract: The accessibility of tourism space is becoming an increasingly significant issue in geographical research due to, amongst other things, demographic changes (an ageing population, growing numbers of people with disabilities) alongside guaranteeing a universal right of access to tourism. The nature of geographical research (physical, socio-economic) allows this issue to be viewed systemically. Drawing on the fields of geography and accessible tourism, this article presents the assumptions of a model whic… Show more

“…The leading European countries of international tourism place significant emphasis on this issuesuch as can be seen in the efforts made by Spain (Vila et al, 2015) and Italy (Agovino et al, 2017) in accessible tourism. As for the former socialist countries, Poland concentrates considerable resources to the research of this subject (Zajadacz, 2014(Zajadacz, , 2019, and it is also clear that there is a growing interest in research into accessible tourism among Hungarian researchers, too (Gonda and Raffay, 2020a). The implementation of accessible tourism is not equal with physical accessibility.…”

“…An alternative to the models presented above is the geographical model of disability (GM model). This concept applies experience gathered to date (connected to the MM and SM models) and focuses mainly on the interrelation between PwD and geographical space (Zajadacz, 2014b). Geographers connect the nature of factors causing disability both with social and spatial aspects of the human environment, they promote solutions which are more "inclusive" and which provide access to sites and the full scope of life in society taking different degrees and types of disability into consideration (Chouinard, Hall, & Wilton, 2010).…”
