A review of clinical practice in a newly developed pediatric psychology program indicates a strong need for psychological services for hospitalized children. Pediatricians' referral questions necessitated a broad range of psychological assessment and intervention approaches. Unique psychosocial dilemmas were presented by chronic physical diseases, infant disorders, and acute psychological crises. These observations have important implications for the design of psychological services in health care settings.
