The objective of this study was to improve the visibility of anatomical details by applying off‐line postimage processing in chest computed radiography (CR). Four spatial domain‐based external image processing techniques were developed by using MATLAB software version 7.0.0.19920 (R14) and image processing tools. The developed techniques were implemented to sample images and their visual appearances confirmed by two consultant radiologists to be clinically adequate. The techniques were then applied to 200 chest clinical images and randomized with other 100 images previously processed online. These 300 images were presented to three experienced radiologists for image quality assessment using standard quality criteria. The mean and ranges of the average scores for three radiologists were characterized for each of the developed technique and imaging system. The Mann‐Whitney U‐test was used to test the difference of details visibility between the images processed using each of the developed techniques and the corresponding images processed using default algorithms. The results show that the visibility of anatomical features improved significantly (0.005≤p≤0.02) with combinations of intensity values adjustment and/or spatial linear filtering techniques for images acquired using 60≤kVp≤70. However, there was no improvement for images acquired using 102≤kVp≤107 (0.127≤p≤0.48). In conclusion, the use of external image processing for optimization can be effective in chest CR, but should be implemented in consultations with the radiologists.PACS number: 87.59.−e, 87.59.−B, 87.59.−bd

PurposeThe aim of this study was to determine the reasons and solutions for intraoral phosphor storage plate (PSP) image artifacts and errors, and to develop an appropriate classification of the artifacts.Materials and MethodsThis study involved the retrospective examination of 5,000 intraoral images that had been obtained using a phosphor plate system. Image artifacts were examined on the radiographs and classified according to possible causative factors.ResultsArtifacts were observed in 1,822 of the 5,000 images. After examination of the images, the errors were divided into 6 groups based on their causes, as follows: images with operator errors, superposition of undesirable structures, ambient light errors, plate artifacts (physical deformations and contamination), scanner artifacts, and software artifacts. The groups were then re-examined and divided into 45 subheadings.ConclusionIdentification of image artifacts can help to improve the quality of the radiographic image and control the radiation dose. Knowledge of the basic physics and technology of PSP systems could aid to reduce the need for repeated radiography.

Backgroud: Imaging plate (IP) is a storage media on computed radiography (CR). IP that has been exposed and does not process immediately will decrease the latent image exponentially over time and degrade the image quality. Normally, 25% of signal will be lost if IP was scanned at 10 minutes till 8 hours after exposure. So It will decrease the image quality. Image quality is determined by several factors. One of them is the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This study aims to determine the effect of reading time delay of IP to SNR on CR image.Methods: This research was a quantitative study with an experimental approach. Population of this study was CR digital image with various time delay of IP reading. Samples were 51 digital images of water phantom read by IP reading with time interval was 0 hours, 0.5 hours, 1 hour; 1.5 hour, 2 hours, 2.5 hours, 3 hours, 3.5 hours, 4 hours, 4.5 hours, 5 hours, 5.5 hours, 6 hours, 6.5 hours, 7 hours, 7.5 hours and 8 hours after exposure. Image pixel value and noise was weasured by ImageJ software to determine the value of SNR, then analyzed statistically with the regression test.Results: There was effect of reading time delay to SNR on CR image. Time delay affected 30,5% decreasing of SNR. Generally, time delay of IP reading decrease the SNR. The average decrease was 1.55% of SNR.Conclusion: The decrease of the SNR value was not big enough, only 1.55%. However, it will better when IP read as soon as possible after exposure to reduce the decrease of image quality.
