Acceptability of oral liquid pharmaceutical products in older adults: palatability and swallowability issues

Abstract: BackgroundIn institutional care, oral liquid pharmaceutical products are widely prescribed for older patients, especially for those with swallowing disorders. As medicines acceptability is a key factor for compliance in the older population, this study investigated the acceptability of oral liquid pharmaceutical products in this targeted population.MethodsAn observational, multicenter, prospective study was conducted in eight geriatric hospitals and eight nursing homes in France. Observers reported several beh… Show more

“…In our investigations in young children, there was always a greater issue with girls when an acceptability difference occurred between both sexes. This echoes with a higher sensitivity among older women to the unpalatable oral liquid products which has been similarly observed in elderly patients [ 35 , 36 ].…”

“…Indeed, some patients still able to swallow SODFs, even two capsules in a single sitting, could receive a less accepted powder for oral solution [ 20 ]. The recourse of oral liquid preparations is a widely used alternative to SODFs for inpatients with dysphagia, even though their acceptability appeared to be suboptimal [ 21 ]. Orodispersible tablets (ODTs) seem to be a suitable option for those patients [ 20 ].…”

“…To perform our explorations, we used the CAST (ClinSearch Acceptability Score Test ® ), which is briefly described in this section. This data driven approach, initially developed and validated in pediatrics [ 17 , 18 ] and then transposed to the elderly [ 19 ], provides relevant knowledge on medicine features that best fit different subpopulations of patients [ 20 , 21 , 22 ].…”

“…Furthermore, the available literature published in recent years has tended to focus more on observational studies to measure overall patient acceptability in older patient populations, rather than investigating SODF characteristics and their critical endpoints for swallowability enhancement. Therefore, the current lack of research on developing relevant evidence on the relationship between the physical characteristics of SODF and their direct correlation to swallowability appears to be the main reason for the limited number of scientific articles that were identified within this literature review [26,147,[208][209][210].…”
