Accelerometer-Measured Daily Activity in Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction

Abstract: Background Daily physical activity assessed by accelerometers represents a novel method to assess the impact of interventions on heart failure (HF) patients’ functional status. We hypothesized that daily activity varies by patient characteristics and correlates with established measures of HF severity in HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Methods and Results In this ancillary study of Nitrate’s Effects on Activity Tolerance in HFpEF (NEAT-HFpEF) trial, average daily accelerometer units (ADAU) and h… Show more

“…In contrast to peak V̇ o 2 , accelerometry may provide an assessment of the volume of daily activity that is quantitative, high density, and more applicable to activities of daily living. Accelerometry provides insight on the effect of medical interventions that may not be apparent from intermittent assessments and is complementary with other measures, such as peak exercise capacity . The lack of treatment effect on both measures, in concert with absent effects on quality of life, NT-proBNP levels, and other indicators, shows that inhaled nitrite as administered in this study did not improve clinical status in people with HFpEF.…”

“…63 Although the utility of this novel measure in future HF programs remains to be seen, an ancillary study from NEAT-HFpEF failed to show significant correlations between therapeutically mediated changes in accelerometer units and changes in traditional functional assessments, including 6MWD. 64…”
