Accelerator development at the FREIA Laboratory

Abstract: The FREIA Laboratory at Uppsala University focuses on superconducting technology and accelerator development. It actively supports the development of the European Spallation Source, CERN, and MAX IV, among others. FREIA has developed test facilities for superconducting accelerator technology such as a double-cavity horizontal test cryostat, a vertical cryostat with a novel magnetic field compensation scheme, and a test stand for short cryomodules. Accelerating cavities have been tested in the horizontal cryost… Show more

“…The Sushi magnet was tested at 4.2 K in the vertical cryostat Gersemi [35] of the FREIA (Facility for Research Instrumentation and Accelerators, Uppsala University, SE) laboratory. The cryostat is equipped with a dedicated magnet insert containing a lambda-plate, which allows operation between 4.2 K and 1.9 K maintaining the liquid helium bath at atmospheric pressure [36], providing a maximum current of 2 kA DC with 4 hybrid current leads (copper + NbTi).…”

“…The main equipment of the FREIA Laboratory currently includes a high-capacity helium liquefier, a large horizontal and a vertical cryostat, two 400 kW vacuum-tube RF sources, advanced hard-and software for process control and safe test bunkers, allowing for tests of superconducting high-power equipment like magnets and superconductive accelerating cavities. The FREIA Laboratory is located in a 1000 m 2 large, 10 m high hall forming part of the Ångstr ö m Laboratory in Uppsala [7]. The two 400 kW RF stations at 352 MHz were commissioned and installed by the industry.…”

“…The FREIA laboratory is equipped with two power stations dedicated to the ESS project [18]. During the prototype cryomodule testing, one power station was available while the other was under commissioning [19]. The conditioning was performed by switching from one cavity package to the other with the available high power station, which outputs maximum 400 kW (duty ratio 4.5%) from two combined tetrode tubes.…”
