Accelerated Cognitive Function Decline in Community-Dwelling Older Adults during COVID-19 Pandemic: The Korean Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS)

Abstract: This study aimed to analyze the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on cognitive function of community-dwelling elderly individuals. Five-year (2016 to 2020) longitudinal data of the Korea Frailty and Aging Cohort Study (KFACS) were used. There were 1559 participants in 2016 and 1455 in 2017 aged 72–84 years. Follow-up was conducted at two-year intervals. We selected participants from the database of the 2017 and 2018 surveys for intergroup comparison over 2-year follow-ups. The number of study patients in the 201… Show more

“…Here, we observed that healthy older adults (HOA) showing higher COVID-19 pandemic impact had lower scores in verbal uency. Throughout the pandemic, signi cant cognitive decline has been described in large cohorts of healthy, pre-frail, and frail older adults 33 , particularly regarding memory and recall function 34 . We add up to the literature suggesting an association between the degree of pandemic impact and cognitive performance, particularly verbal uency, in cognitively preserved older adults.…”

“…The pandemic had seemingly brought about accelerated cognitive decline among the older adult population 3 . A separate study highlights a potential frailty cascade that may have taken place during the pandemic, with frail older adults displaying increased dementia and cognitive decline 4,5 .…”

“…1 The pandemic had seemingly brought about accelerated cognitive decline among the older adult population. 3 A separate study highlights a potential frailty cascade that may have taken place during the pandemic, with frail older adults displaying increased dementia and cognitive decline. 4,5 Cognitive frailty describes co-occurring mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and frailty upon exclusion of dementia and physical disability.…”

“…One study by Noguchi et al [22] in older adults found more subjective cognitive impairments as the pandemic continued in those participants that became or remained socially isolated. In a longitudinal study that started following older adults already before the pandemic, a steeper cognitive decline with time was observed since the pandemic, especially for memory and recall of word lists [23], [24]. Moreover, higher anxiety symptoms in older adults were related to higher impairments in subjective cognitive functioning [25].…”
