ACCase-inhibiting herbicides: mechanism of action, resistance evolution and stewardship

Abstract: Herbicides play an important role in preventing crop yield losses due to both their weed interference ability and their capacity for increasing soil conservation in no-till systems. Group A herbicides or acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase) are essential tools the selective management of glyphosate resistance in grass weed species. In this review, we describe important aspects of ACCase biology and herbicides targeting this enzyme, along with a discussion on stewardship programs to delay the evolution of herbicide … Show more

“…Resistance to different chemical classes of ACCase-inhibiting herbicide in L. rigidum can result from TSR, or/and NTSR mechanisms ( Takano et al, 2021 ). Point mutations at Trp-2027 and Asp-2078 in the ACCases of the two HR populations ESR-1 and ESR-2 were determined, with no TSR-conferring mutations found at any of the four positions tested in the HR population ES-resistant 3.…”

“…Furthermore, glufosinate is not considered volatile and the newer transgenic technologies for herbicide‐resistant crops tend to stack multiple events, including glufosinate resistance as one of their traits in most varieties. Glufosinate will also continue playing an important role in tropical countries such as Brazil, where grasses are the biggest challenge for weed management 12 and paraquat has recently been banned. Lastly, while there has been an increased effort to develop new herbicide modes of action, no new effective and non‐selective herbicide is expected to launch in the next few years 13 …”

“…The main foliar-applied herbicide used in chemical weed management of tough lovegrass is glyphosate (HEAP & DUKE, 2018), that inhibits the 5-enolpyruvyl-shikimate-3-phosphate synthase enzyme -EPSPs. However, with the evolution of resistance to herbicides, another modes of action as acetolactate synthase (ALS) (YU & POWLES, 2014) and acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCase) inhibiting herbicides (TAKANO et al, 2020) are needed to be evaluated as alternative options to glyphosate. Glyphosate has broad-spectrum of action and ALS inhibiting herbicides have action on monocotyledons and/or dicotyledons plants according to the molecule (HEAP & DUKE, 2018;YU & POWLES, 2014).…”
