Acaricidal activity of the essential oils from three Lamiaceae plant species on Rhipicephalus turanicus Pom. (Acari: Ixodidae)

Abstract: Acaricidal effects of three Labiatae essential oils extracted from ariel parts of Thymus sipyleus Boiss. subsp. sipyleus, Mentha longifolia L., and Dorystoechas hastata Boiss. & Heldr. ex Bentham on 10-day-old Rhipicephalus turanicus Pom. (Acari: Ixodidae) larvae were evaluated by using the larval packet test bioassay. Serial dilutions of the three essential oils were tested from a starting concentration of 1-0.1% (1.0, 0.5, 0.25, and 0.1% w/v). Results showed that all essential oils had very similar activity,… Show more

“…Among them, essential oils and isolated terpenoids have shown activity against diverse stages of several species of ticks [63]. Many studies have reported the ovicidal (inhibited oviposition and inhibited hatchability), effects against all the stages of ticks [3,14,34,[84][85][86][87].…”

“…Moreover, essential oils are known for their antihistamine [85,132] and anti-inflammatory effect. They reduce inflammation by increasing the production of interleukin-10 [132,149-151].…”

“…Mite mortality using EOs of Cinnamomum zeylanicum (Na et al ., 2011), Laurus novocanariensis (Macchioni et al ., 2006) and Cymbopogon nardus (Magi et al ., 2006) has been reported. Tick and flies mortality has been described using two different Mentha species, M. longifolia (Koc et al ., 2012) and M. piperita (Morey and Khandagle, 2012), respectively. Cymbopogon nardus EO has also been used for many years as an insect repellent (Zaridah et al ., 2003).…”

“…The results of a larval immersion test using three essential oils derived from plants of the Lamiaceae family [thyme, horsemint (Mentha longifolia) and Dorystoechas hasata] showed 100% mortality in R. microplus larvae 24 h after a 5-min submersion in 0.1% solutions of each oil (Koc et al, 2012). Cumin (Cuminum cyminum) and allspice (Pimenta dioica) essential oils were also effective against the same tick species in larval immersion tests at concentrations of 1.25% and 2.5%, respectively.…”
