Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics/American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Consensus Malnutrition Characteristics: Usability and Association With Outcomes

Abstract: Malnutrition has been documented in approximately one‐third of patients in developed countries on hospital admission and is associated with negative clinical outcomes. The need to identify and intervene in at‐risk patients is critical to minimize these negative outcomes. A consensus approach for diagnosing and documenting malnutrition in hospitalized adult and pediatric patients was published jointly by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (Academy) and the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutriti… Show more

“…Implementation of a comprehensive PCM program in the inpatient setting involves many steps and frequently requires modifications to the EHR, ongoing assessment of outcomes, and continued refinement of processes and procedures. The additional time and resources invested in these QAPI activities can create value as evidenced by increased hospital payment and improved patient outcomes . In response to common challenges identified by QAPI projects throughout US facilities, national organizations are leading quality initiatives to improve PCM care and achieve better outcomes.…”

“…Malnutrition is associated with longer hospital stays, greater in-hospital mortality, and readmissions [1][2][3]. To prevent negative consequences due to malnutrition, the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN)/Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) and the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) [4,5] recommend providing parenteral nutrition (PN) to the patients if they are severely malnourished when they are hospitalized or sufficient calories are not allowed for an extended time by oral or enteral feeding [6][7][8][9].…”
