Academics as orchestrators of continuous innovation ecosystems: towards a fourth generation of CI initiatives

Abstract: In this paper, we shed light on why academics are in one of the best positions to orchestrate inter-organisational initiatives of continuous innovation (CI) within an innovation context that is shifting towards an open collaborative ecosystem mode. Two rationales seem to explain the potential key role of academics within a CI ecosystem: 1) their independence; 2) their compliance to CI ecosystem's purposes-independently by its type. The implications of the five papers invited to be part of the special issue, an… Show more

“…A consortium company CEO volunteered to be the chairman of the CEO group, which motivated other companies to join the consortium. Academics are considered as neutral players and thus suitable actors for orchestrating innovation systems (Gastaldi et al, 2015). The recognition of an opportunity for implementing process innovations is similar to the innovation development process created by Blayse and Manley (2004), who stated that the first step is to recognise an opportunity for innovation.…”

“…After decentralization, the entrepreneur's role is best described as an enabler and sustainer of transformation (Gastaldi, 2015) for those partners that have fully embraced the QSearch vision (ideology) and are prepared to take this vision forward in their own professional environments. Hence, the mature ecosystem retains a special subset of the partners acquired throughout the first two phases; specifically, those partners whose level of independence and responsibility matches that of the entrepreneur and who are now free in the forms they adopt for resource exchanges, value creation, and co-evolution.…”
