Research data management (RDM) and its accompanying services and infrastructures are predominantly still in a state of infancy in many African countries and little is known about the RDM habits of the researchers from these areas. Our research showed that researcher RDM behaviour is similar across the globe, but our experience was that the will to implement formal RDM is not. Similarly, the responsibility for RDM implementation is not always clear. What is clear is that, although the library should not assume primary responsibility, it does have a role to play in the successful implementation of RDM services. This paper briefly discusses the results of two RDM surveys conducted at a relatively resource-constrained, albeit leading, South African research institute. The surveys were designed to establish the RDM habits as well as the RDM needs as expressed by both emerging and experienced researchers at the stated institute. The intention was to use the results to initiate full-scale implementation of RDM services by the library. It was interesting to note that neither the emerging nor the experienced researchers showed significant deviations in research behaviour compared to that found amongst their colleagues in more well-resourced environments. What was different is that implementation grinded to a halt and that an action plan that deviated from that in published literature had to be developed so that relevant progress could still be made. This RDM action plan includes a range of stakeholders and would be of use to research institutes starting out on the RDM journey.

Background:As part of a health sciences library’s internal assessment of its research support services, an environmental scan and literature review were conducted to identify research services offered elsewhere in Canada. Through this process, it became clear that a more formal review of the academic literature would help libraries make informed decisions about their services. To address this gap, we conducted a scoping review of research services provided in health sciences libraries contexts.Methods:Searches were conducted in Medline, Embase, ERIC, CINAHL, LISTA, LISS, Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Google for articles which described the development, implementation, or evaluation of one or more research support initiatives in a health sciences library context. We identified additional articles by searching reference lists of included studies and soliciting medical library listservs.Results:Our database searches retrieved 7134 records, 4026 after duplicates were removed. Title/abstract screening excluded 3751, with 333 records retained for full-text screening. Seventy-five records were included, reporting on 74 different initiatives. Included studies were published between 1990 and 2017, the majority from North American and academic library contexts. Major service areas reported were the creation of new research support positions, and support services for systematic review support, grants, data management, open access and repositories.Conclusion:This scoping review is the first review to our knowledge to map research support services in the health sciences library context. It identified main areas of research service support provided by health sciences libraries that can be used for benchmarking or information gathering purposes.

Introduction.In a research library, researchers are the main players, while . librarians should be the partners in conducting research even though this combination rarely happens. In general, librarians are only involved in a part of research activities as their research assistants to carry out some administrative stuffs, such as distributing questionnaires and sending invitation letters, instead of designing a research plan and/or somequestionnaires or doing data analyses.Data Collection Method. We interviewed librarians in the Center for Political Studies, Research Center for Economic, Center for Science and Technology Development, and Center for Scientific Documentation and Information of Indonesian Institute of Sciences, Jakarta.Data Analyses. Data were analyzed using qualitative analysis methods, through the direct interview, where data categorized by using open coding.Results and Discussions.The results stated that 86.7% of respondents had ever been involved in research activities carried out by the research center in the same or different units. From that result, 53.3% respondents ever engaged research activities up to 5 times in a year. In the other hands, librarians who answer conduct independent research and are often involved in the research are 13% respondents. Some recommendations figured out from this research are (1) a librarian could be a plagiarism examiner for a research proposal, (2) a librarian must be literated in information technologies, (3) a librarian should be involved in examining a literature review of the proposal and writing the manuscripts.Conclusions.The role of a librarian is not just as a research assistant or a data collector but as a research buddy who could help addressing some documentative problems.
