Academic integrity in the age of Artificial Intelligence (AI) authoring apps

Abstract: What does it mean to write, learn to write, and teach writing in an age when students can use the latest artificial intelligence (AI) co‐authoring tools to produce entire essays without even adding an original idea or composing a single sentence? This article addresses questions of authorship and academic integrity concerning the use of AI writing assistants and the latest GPT‐3 (Generative Pre‐trained Transformer, Version 3) tools. It begins by problematizing the use of these tools, and then illustrates how s… Show more

“…Yan, 2023). Therefore, for learners to be able to use AI chatbots productively, they need to be aware of the functions of the tool and understand how to interact with them effectively (e.g., construct appropriate prompts and responses; Hockly, 2023;Yeo, 2023). They must also be aware of the tools' limitations and know how to use them critically.…”

“…It will be important for teachers to have the competencies needed to capitalise on the affordances of generative AI tools while being critically aware of their drawbacks and limitations. Important to this will be the teacher's role in guiding students to use generative AI tools to support their learning, rather than a tool to complete assessed assignment tasks on their behalf (Yeo, 2023).…”

“…Speculations and debates regarding the disruptions and opportunities generative AI tools (e.g. ChatGPT) will bring to language teaching, learning and assessment are now the talk of the town in schools, universities and language institutions worldwide (Yeo, 2023). Generative AI is the part of artificial intelligence that leverages deep learning models to generate human-like content, including audio, code, images, text, simulations, 3D objects and videos.…”
