“…However, growing use of bibliometric indicators also altered researcher behaviours via corrupted incentives, leading to a variety of negative outcomes (Abramo et al, 2021;Butler, 2003;Lopez Pineiro & Hicks, 2015;Yücel & Demir, 2018) and motivating various groups to call for more nuanced and equitable research assessment, such as in the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) (Cagan, 2013), Metrics Tide report (Wilsdon et al, 2015), and Leiden Manifesto (Hicks et al, 2015). This has resulted in publishers, research organizations and funders signing-up to the aforementioned initiatives and developing their own policies to ensure metrics are deployed and used responsibly.…”

“…The pursuit of other activities in the effort to earn more individual income can lead to research time lost. Thus, financial incentives can enhance researchers' productivity and satisfaction at universities (Yücel & Demir, 2018). One practical example is the performance-oriented payment system, the W-salary system for professors, which has been implemented in Germany since 2005 (Fitzenberger & Schulze, 2014).…”

“…1 In the case of Australia, the bibliometric approach of research performance evaluation policy showed a drop in the relative quality of publications along with an increase in publication productivity (Butler 2003). In Turkey it led to uncertainty, and to research ethics and quality issues (Yucel & Demir, 2018). Similarly, Kazakhstan appeared in the list of the most affected countries (Macháč ek & Srholec, 2021).…”
