“…In order to answer the research questions of this review, a search and review of articles (2012–2016) authored in the global South in the 10 largest social work journals, determined by the total number of article outputs, was undertaken. This review joins similar work that explores trends and characteristics in knowledge generation in social work (Howard and Garland, 2015; Kreisberg and Marsh, 2016; Ligon et al, 2012; Perron et al, 2016) and adds to Lombe et al (2013) and Pawar’s (2015) work in drawing attention to social work research collaboration with the global South.…”

“…A more recent study by Ligon, Cobb, and Thyer indicated which social work programs had the most productive faculty members, by measurement of articles published in top social work specific journals (2012). A quick assessment of the list shows that among the most productive faculty groups listed in the study, approximately two-thirds of the top 20 positions on the list were social work programs ranked in the top 20 of the US News rankings (US News & World Report, 2013;Ligon et al, 2012). Additionally, 73% of programs in the top 22 positions were also found in US News' top 26 ranking positions (US News & World Report, 2013;Ligon et al, 2012).…”

“…These journals included the British Journal of Social Work (BJSW), Research on Social Work Practice (RSWP), Journal of Social Service Research (JSSR), Social Work Research (SWR), Social Service Review (SSR), and Social Work (SW). According to previous empirical studies, these journals have been identified as the so-called Tier 1 empirical journals that have been used before in similar studies (Holosko, 2010;Ligon, Cobb, & Thyer, 2012;Ligon, Jackson, & Thyer, 2007;Rubin & Parrish, 2007;Shardlow & Harlow, 2010;Thyer & Bentley, 1986). For example, Holosko (2010) reviewed articles in SSR, RSWP, and SWR over two time periods to locate and describe research designs used in published SWR and evaluation studies, while Rubin and Parrish (2007) examined RSWP and SWR over two time periods in their study on problematic phrases in the conclusion of published outcome studies.…”
