Academ Virus, a Novel Hantavirus in the Siberian Mole (Talpa altaica) from Russia

Abstract: To date, six hantavirus species have been detected in moles (family Talpidae). In this report, we describe Academ virus (ACDV), a novel hantavirus harbored by the Siberian mole (Talpa altaica) in Western Siberia. Genetic analysis of the complete S-, M-, and partial L-genomic segments showed that ACDV shared a common evolutionary origin with Bruges virus, previously identified in the European mole (Talpa europaea), and is distantly related to other mole-borne hantaviruses. Co-evolution and local adaptation of g… Show more

“…Novel genera or species within this family will be discovered, particularly from novel regions or host species. For instance, the novel hantaviruses Rusne virus from the root vole in Lithuania and the Academ virus from moles in Russia have recently been reported [ 99 , 100 ]. Some genomic segments of important known hantaviruses (e.g., Lena virus and El Moro Canyon virus) will be sequenced and analyzed.…”

“…In 2008, the first talpid hantavirus, Asama virus (ASAV), was described after its discovery in Japanese shrew moles ( Urotrichus talpoides Temminck, 1841) [ 66 ]. At least seven additional talpid mole viruses have since been discovered in Asia, Europe, and North America [ 65 , 67 , 68 ].…”
