This paper studies a distributed generation electrical system. It is composed of an induction generator with a prime mover, a single-phase utility grid and a solar panel. All energy sources are connected by using a reduced switch count ac-ac converters. A hydraulic power or an other power controlled source is adopted to drive the induction generator, operating as a prime mover. The control system strategy is conceived to obtain the dc-link voltage equal to that of standard converter with five legs. In addition, the control system is able to operate with a mechanical power controlled, such as that obtained from hybrid energy system. Experimental results are presented.

In this study, a multilevel five-leg single-phase ac-dc-ac converter and its generalisation are presented. The converter is suitable to be used as an uninterrupted power supply or a unified power quality conditioner without an isolation transformer. The operating principles, the pulse-width modulation strategy and the control system for the proposed converter are presented. The proposed single-phase multilevel ac-dc-ac converter is composed mostly of low-power switches capable of generating input and output voltages with low harmonic content. The proposed configuration is compared with the conventional solution in terms of harmonic distortion, semiconductor losses and ratings of switches. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed configuration. The experimental verification of the proposed topology and control strategy was obtained by using IGBTs with dedicated drives and a digital signal processor TMS320F28335 with plug-in boards and sensors.

The digital revolution and faster switching devices have introduced more sophisticated control systems that require high quality and reliable operation. The rapidly growing demand for alternative/renewable energy generation systems and use of energy sources on a large scale, require new technologies. In this paper, a novel renewable energy conversion system, which has the reduced number of switching elements preserving the same power conversion functionality is proposed. The proposed multi-mode energy conversion system is able to supply energy from multi-sources (renewable energy source, battery, and ultra-capacitor) to a load and store energy with the minimum number of switching elements. The proposed approach is verified both by simulations and experiments. The results will enable more timely and wide usage of alternative/renewable energy systems resulting in increased energy security.
