This paper has the aim of providing a view of a lively debated topic which has broad impact on the design of electrical apparatus and new insulating materials, that is, the interaction between space charge and aging processes of polymeric insulation. Aging models developed in recent decades that consider explicitly or implicitly the contribution of space charge to insulation degradation, under both dc and ac voltage, are dealt with, with the intention to point out their range of validity. Some conventional phenomenological models that have been used for much more than two decades without referring to space charges can be exploited to account for electrical field and activation energy modification due to space charge. These, together with models conceived considering space charges as the driving force for aging, are especially examined. In addition, recent models that disregard the action of space charge as an ageing factor, but consider space charge as the consequence of degradation processes are also discussed.

This paper reports on the result of space charge evolution in cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) planar samples approximately 220 µm thick. The space charge measurement technique used in this study is the pulsed electroacoustic method.There are two phases to this experiment. In the first phase, the samples were subjected to dc 30 kV dc mm −1 and ac (sinusoidal) electric stress levels of 30 kV pk mm −1 at frequencies of 1, 10 and 50 Hz ac. In addition, ac space charge under 30 kV rms mm −1 and 60 kV pk mm −1 electric stress at 50 Hz was also investigated. The volts-off results showed that the amount of charge trapped in XLPE sample under dc electric stress is significantly bigger than samples under ac stress even when the applied ac stresses are substantially higher.The second phase of the experiment involves studying the dc space charge evolution in samples that were tested under ac stress during the first phase of the experiment. Ac ageing causes positive charge to become more dominant over negative charge. It was also discovered that ac ageing creates deeper traps, particularly for negative charge.This paper also gives a brief overview of the data processing methods used to analyse space charge under ac electric stress.

Ageing and reliability of electrical insulation: the risk of hybrid AC/DC grids

With an impetuous growth of DC links and future grids that will be often hybrid, providing AC and DC supply to nearby or the same customer, an important element is often neglected, that is, electrical insulation. There are no doubts that overhead lines will step back compared to insulated cables, for known reasons of environmental impact, right of way and reliability, especially in an urban or harsh environment. On the other hand, while AC insulation systems have been investigated and used for decades, there is no analogue experience for DC polymeric insulation, nor for insulation systems subjected to power electronics supply. This study aims at enhancing the attention on this topic, focusing on insulation ageing mechanisms and models of relevance for hybrid AC/DC assets and grids. Ageing and life models for AC, DC and power electronics supply are discussed and compared to experimental data, focusing on partial discharge and space charge. It is shown how these two phenomena affect lifetime for different AC, DC and transient operating conditions. The main drivers for insulation design and material selection are discussed, showing that insulation reliability can be achieved only if operating stresses, ageing mechanisms and life models are known and accounted for properly by insulation designers.
