Abundance and biomass of planktonic ciliates in the sea area around Zhangzi Island, Northern Yellow Sea in July and August 2010

Abstract: We investigated the abundance and biomass of planktonic ciliates in the sea around Zhangzi Island, Northern Yellow Sea, in July and August 2010. Ciliates were sampled from surface, middle and bottom depths at nineteen sample stations along three transects (Transect STA, Y1 and Y2). A 1鄄L water sample was collected at each depth with a 2. 5鄄L Niskin water sampler and fixed in 1% acid Lugol忆s iodine solution. The bottles were stored in the dark for up to two months until analyzed. The fixed water samples were le… Show more

“…The persistence of these agglutinated genera mainly depends on the availability of siliceous materials for construction of their hard lorica as well as the existence of their preferred food . The dominance of Tintinnopsis in estuarine and coastal water in India and other environments such as Jiaozhou Bay and Zhangzi Island was mainly due to their unique flexible adaptive strategies by which they reached their maximum abundance during the 4 days of the study period. The cosmopolitan species is eurythermal and euryhaline in nature and thus can sustain in different aquatic environments which was endorsed by Krinsic and Reylonds .…”

“…Simultaneously of the most important components of plankton, ciliates are trophic link between the traditional food chain and microbial food web (Elloumi et al ., 2015). Marine planktonic ciliates are a major, ubiquitous and varied group of protozooplankton (Ying et al ., 2013). Their dynamics are closely related to variations in environmental parameters (Küppers and Claps, 2012), particularly in coastal ecosystems due to the combination of marine and land influences, making ciliates useful as indicators of ecosystem health status (Kchaou et al ., 2009; Elloumi et al ., 2015).…”
