Abstract: Introduction: Recent randomized trials have shown that patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure combined with antiplatelet therapy in cryptogenic stroke patients ≤ 60 years of age is associated with a reduced risk of stroke compared to antiplatelet therapy alone, presumably by preventing a paradoxical embolism.
