Abstract: Introduction: A pivotal step in vascular calcification is the transformation of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) to osteoblast-like cells. Osteoprotegerin (OPG), a soluble protein produced by SMCs, inhibits this transformation and may represent a therapeutic target for calcification reduction.
